Barcelona's Eixample is an huge, sprawling district that is both conventional and beautiful. The wide avenues and grid like design are unique characteristics that blend modern thinking with classic modernista architecture. It's home to many of the city's most impressive structures including Sagrada Familia, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló. It's also home to some of the best specialty coffee shops and cafés in Barcelona.

To help you navigate this incredible neighbourhood, here's our guide to the best specialty coffee shops in Eixample, Barcelona. It's a mix of impressive locations, beautiful buildings, and of course great atmosphere and coffee.

LA PAPA (Dreta de l'Eixample)

With queues around the block on the weekend thanks to it's delicious brunch menu it's good to know LA PAPA also supports local coffee roasters by serving some of the cities best specialty coffee. This café is located in a beautiful building at the top of Carrer de Pau Claris. The interior is modern and the soft colours and organic shapes complement the food and coffee.

As coffee lovers we went straight to the espresso bar at the front where we could skip the queues and chat to the barista about the coffee at LA PAPA. We also got to watch first-hand how he crafts each cup of coffee with patience and skill. They have a rotation of local coffee roasters to keep the coffee experience fresh from month to month.

ONIS COFFEE is located on the ground floor of a beautiful century old building in Eixample. The inside is simple yet impressive. It has a welcoming and calm atmosphere which feels like a nice escape from the bustling city outside. There's loads of light from the windows and classic fixtures like the chandelier and wall decorations contrast with the modern La Marzocco espresso machine. There's limited seating, but if you're lucky you can take advantage and grab the window seat or bench out front and enjoy your coffee and the foot traffic on Carrer de Roger de LLúria.

The red striped canopy and busy espresso bar that opens on to Carrer de Valencia are iconic features of this café in Eixample. Another spot that makes the most of its location by including a terrace at the front. Roast Club are Barcelona based roasters and their goal is to take coffee to another level. You can find creative and interesting flavour profiles here (Blueberry Fudge, Zesty Pavlova, Choco Power). If you are a coffee enthusiast this place should be on your list. It's usually packed so expect to queue on weekends, however it's really worth it.

Another nice coffee to go spot located on Carrer d'Enric Granados. We usually stop here when we've been exploring Eixample and need a quick coffee boost. Its minimalist design fits elegantly with the classic modernista buildings surrounding it. There's space inside so if you need to escape the busy street, this is a great place to do so. The La Marzocco espresso machine is right at the entrance, so you can enjoy watching the baristas make your coffee.

All the way over in Fort Pienc in the only modern building on this list is Three Marks Coffee. Bright, industrial and clean, this coffee shop is a reflection of the crisp coffees they serve. There's a spacious terrace at the front to sit and enjoy the city. Inside the modern/industrial design complements the sharp lines of the espresso machine and equipment. As a Barcelona based roaster they serve their own coffee, which is renowned for being full of fruity notes and flavours.
